Ibrahimovic expects to retire in 2016

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has indicated that he will end his playing career when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires in 2016.

The Sweden striker joined PSG from Milan in July 2012 and has enjoyed a prolific stint with the French capital club.

Ibrahimovic has fired PSG to two straight Ligue 1 titles, a Coupe de la Ligue crown and two Trophee des Champions successes in his time at the Parc des Princes.

The 32-year-old, who has scored 76 goals for the Parisian giants, has revealed that he expects to hang up his boots after the 2015/16 campaign.

I have a contract until 2016, Ibrahimovic told ESPN.

I will be 34 next season and I don t see myself continuing to play at the top level after that. So probably the answer is yes.

´Why not believe in ourselves?´ – Stengel spot-on as promoted Liverpool stun champions Chelsea

Champions Chelsea were stunned 2-1 by promoted Liverpool as the Women s Super League season got under way, with American Katie Stengel converting two second-half penalties.

All three goals came from the spot, with Chelsea s Fran Kirby firing home in the third minute, before Stengel equalised in the 67th minute and netted the winner three minutes from the end on her WSL debut.

It is the first time a promoted team have defeated the reigning champions in their opening match since March 2015, when Liverpool were on the receiving end of a 2-1 loss against Sunderland.

Stengel said Liverpool came into the contest against Chelsea with strong belief.

[We felt] we could win this game, she told Sky Sports. It s just another team out there, another 11 players, and…

Euro 2016 Qualifying Review: England and Slovakia maintain perfect records

England and Slovakia remain perfect in Euro 2016 qualification so far, as both sides tasted victory in hard-fought encounters on Sunday.

Roy Hodgson s England came from a goal down to defeat Slovenia 3-2 in Ljubljana, while Slovakia held off Macedonia to earn a 2-1 victory at home.

Milivoje Novakovic put Slovenia ahead in the 37th minute, before two Jack Wilshere goals the second a stunning effort from outside the box had England in front.

Nejc Pecnik looked to have earned a point with a fine header six minutes from time but just two minutes later Wayne Rooney took advantage of a fortunate run of the ball to slot home and seal the points.

That strike moved Rooney onto 48 goals for his country, level with Gary Lineker and one behind the record set by Bobby…

Barca star Alba bemoans ´bad point´ after Alaves draw

Jordi Alba lamented Barcelona s bad point after the embattled LaLiga giants were held to a 1-1 draw by Deportivo Alaves.

Barca – playing for the first time since Ronald Koeman s sacking – saw Memphis Depay s sublime 49th-minute strike cancelled out within three minutes at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Spanish side Barca have taken 16 points from 11 games in LaLiga this season (W4 D4 L3) – equalling their worst start at this stage in the three points for a win era (also 16 in the 2000-2001 and 2002-03 campaigns).

It s a bad point, star Barca full-back Alba told Movistar. Anything other than three points for Barcelona is bad and even more so when you see where we are in the table.

We did enough, but we re struggling to score and teams are scoring against us…

Saha: It´s insane to say Ronaldo was a bad signing for Man Utd

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha cannot believe  insane  claims that Cristiano Ronaldo was a bad signing for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford from Juventus in the last transfer window and is comfortably the club s top scorer in all competitions this term, scoring 12 times from 17 appearances seven clear of the next-highest scorers Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood.

The 36-year-old also has the highest expected goals tally of any United player across all competitions with 9.67 Fernandes is next with 3.46.

Saha  who played for the Red Devils between 2004 and 2008, scoring 28 times in 86 Premier League appearances for the club does not see how anyone could view the acquisition of Ronaldo as anything but a success.

It s insan…

Bayern to turn attention to Amadou Onana as Palhinha alternative

According to , Bayern Munich are frustrated with being unable to move forward in their pursuit of Fulham s Joao Palhinha, and they ve turned their attention to Everton s Amadou Onana as an alternative target.

Bayern have been trying to sign Palhinha since last summer and their first attempt failed at the eleventh hour. The development was followed by reports of the Bavarians being likely to try again in January, but that didn t happen either. They have, however, tried again over the recent weeks but it seems Fulham s valuation of the Portugal international is too high, and Onana might just be the right man to boost their base-of-midfield options ahead of 2024/25 instead.

Vincent Kompany, the recently appointed Bayern head coach, is apparently an admirer of his Belgian c…

Prediction: Chelsea vs Southampton

Best Odds: 7/10

Bookmaker:

In desperate need of a boost on Saturday afternoon, Chelsea will welcome relegation scrappers Southampton to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea

Starting with the hosts, getting their Champions League knockout stage adventure underway with another toothless display in midweek, Chelsea find themselves in the midst of a public nightmare. Eventually getting hit with a 1-0 first-leg defeat away at German giants Borussia Dortmund, it is no secret that Graham Potter has a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders. While the former European champions might have only appointed the ex-Brighton boss back in September, Chelsea have failed to find any kind of stability. Knowing that they need a minor miracle if they re to punch a much-needed top-four finish …

Can Ronaldo and Bale put egos aside to help Real Madrid win trophies in 2016?

Can Real Madrid stars put egos aside? / Image via mirror.co.uk

The Spanish giants are ending the calendar year only two points short of the joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid have the opportunity for a fresh start in 2016, but much of the remainder of the ongoing campaign will depend upon Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who are seemingly ready to put their issues behind them and take responsibility to lead the team forward.

As the Welsh player began to impose his presence in the Real Madrid’s squad, the Portuguese star did not hide his emotions and feelings on the pitch.

Frustration

The two have often failed to find each other on the field in the early stages of the ongoing season, sparking speculation of ill-tempered r…

Ryan Giggs prosecution over domestic violence allegations abandoned

Former Manchester United winger and Wales manager Ryan Giggs’ retrial later this month on domestic violence charges has been abandoned after lawyers withdrew the prosecution.

Giggs, 49, was due to go on trial for a second time on July 31, accused of controlling or coercive behaviour towards his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, 39, between August 2017 and November 2020.

Giggs was also accused of assault by “losing control” and headbutting her and the common assault of Greville’s sister Emma by elbowing her in the jaw, during a row at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on November 1 2020.

He denied the offences and underwent a month-long trial, ending last August when the jury failed to reach any verdicts.

Prosecutors then sought and were granted …

Spain v Germany: Flick demands clear minds with four-time winners already on the brink

After suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Japan on matchday one, Germany could ideally do with a swift and straightforward response.

Unfortunately for them, awaiting Die Nationalelf at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday will be a Spain side that remarkably won 7-0 against Costa Rica last time out.

Germany know defeat could doom them to a second successive group-stage elimination at the World Cup, an astonishing turn of events given that before 2018 they had not failed to get past the tournament s first round since 1938.

Another loss would consign Germany to three consecutive World Cup defeats for the first time ever – they have also never been beaten twice in the group stage of a single edition before.

The pressure is already on head coach Hansi Flick, who suggested…
