Ranking Best Available 2024 NBA Head Coach Candidates

NBA free agency is not limited to players. What about coaches? Who are the top free agents when it comes to coaching jobs? The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are the two teams still looking for a new head coach. Here are 10 of the top coaching free agents they could consider:1.    Kenny AtkinsonOn paper, Atkinson’s coaching record does not look very impressive. He went 118-190 with the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020, and he went 1-4 in his only postseason appearance. But those numbers don’t describe the hot garbage that Atkinson inherited in Brooklyn and the respect that he commands across the NBA. He has spent the last three years as Steve Kerr’s assistant in Golden State, and he has the experience and personality to help steady a team in need of a new leader.2.    James BorregoLike Atkinson, Borrego already has experienced his learning curve as a head coach in the NBA. He led the Charlotte Hornets for four seasons, where he went 138-163 but never reached the postseason. Charlotte took a downturn after moving on from Borrego, which is worth noting. It depends on your perspective: Would Borrego count as a retread because he already has been a coach? Or would he bring valuable experience to his next stop, most likely with a better roster?3.    Chris QuinnHere’s your top “unproven” candidate, as in someone with no head coaching experience at the NBA level. However, by no means does that mean Quinn would be a bad hire. He has put in the time – 10 years as a Miami Heat assistant coach – and has learned under one of the league’s best minds in Erik Spoelstra. He’s plenty familiar with postseason pressure, even if Spoelstra is in the top seat and he’s serving as a key adviser. The former Notre Dame guard spent six years in the NBA and is on the path toward a top job, whether it comes this year or soon after.4.    Sam CassellCassell has put in his time. He’s due for an opportunity. We know J.J. Redick is getting all the love as the potential next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, and he reportedly would try to bring in Cassell as a top assistant, but this feels backward. If anything, Cassell should call the shots and give Redick a chance as an assistant. Cassell played 15 years in the league and has spent another 15 years as an assistant under Flip Saunders, Randy Wittman, Doc Rivers and (currently) Joe Mazzulla with the Boston Celtics.5.    Terry StottsWould Stotts be a sexy hire? No. Would he be a smart hire? Absolutely. The longtime Portland Trail Blazers coach has 517 regular-season wins and 23 postseason wins. He enjoyed a ton of success with Damian Lillard in Portland, and when he resigned from an assistant coaching position with the Milwaukee Bucks, the team seemed to suffer. He knows how to win, and that goes a long way.The best of the rest6.    Micah NoriNori has thrived as the top assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and he has the respect of players across the league. When Chris Finch injured his knee in the postseason, the team turned to Nori to lead in-game coaching without hesitation. 7.    J.J. RedickRedick had a long and successful playing career in the NBA, and he obviously knows the game well. Teammates loved him. But he has spent most of his post-playing career behind a microphone. He’s smart and engaging. Does that qualify him as a head coach?8.    Sean SweeneySweeney is an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, who have set themselves apart in an arduous Western Conference. This may or may not be the year he gets a top coaching job, but he’s certainly worth an interview.9.    Dave JoergerJoerger is looking for his third NBA head-coaching gig. He spent three seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and three seasons with the Sacramento Kings. All told, he went 245-247 in the regular season and 9-13 in the playoffs.10. Johnnie BryantHere’s one more rising assistant to watch in the coming years. Bryant, 38, is the New York Knicks’ associate head coach under Tom Thibodeau.
